Over 600 people have been injured during the annual Black Nazarene parade, one of the most popular religious gatherings in the Philippine capital Manila. Around 800,000 Catholic devotees had flocked to the city to join the procession on January 9, 2019.
The Black Nazarene is a life-sized statue of Jesus Christ originally from Mexico and brought to the Philippines in 1606. Blackened when it survived a fire, the statue is believed to have healing power which draws worshippers who try to touch the icon during the parades.
